On-Site Laser Medic Considers Itself Customer Caregiver
By Mark Madler
San Fernando Valley Business Journal Staff
On-Site LaserMedic Corp. has many big, nationally known clients for which it provides managed printing services. But it is the smaller clients that chief executive Gail Solomon has a soft spot for; the clients that helped get the business going when she and business partner Ellen Dee started in 1992.
“When they are down I want to get them up and running,” Solomon said in her Chatsworth office.
Hardware is of less interest to Solomon and the employees at On-Site as much as assuring companies they are getting the most of their printers. This they do with a detailed assessment of all the devices a company uses and with sophisticated software that notifies the On-Site call center of problems ranging from low toner to a complete breakdown.

Laser jets vs. Ink jets in the office space
Less reliable, they are a true case for the razor blade business model. Buy a cheap device, make an up front cheap supply with a high turn over rate and sell more supplies. The initial perception on cost seems to be inexpensive when in reality it is much greater.
Consider the price of personal inkjet supplies: the cartridges hold about an ounce of ink and sell for about $30 each. There are 128 ounces in a gallon, so the ink in your inkjet cartridges actually has an equivalent cost of about $3,900 per gallon.
With all costs figured in, each document page printed on a typical laser printer costs from 2 cents a page to 5 cents; on an inkjet, the cost per page can run from 5 to 10 cents. Adding color can make these costs 3-5 times greater.
Other thoughts:
Why laser jets? If image permanence is important and you expect your documents to be exposed to damaging elements like sunlight and rain, demanding work environments, lasers, are often the best choice. Color laser printers now perform at speeds comparable to monochrome printers, they’re reliable, and they’re an economical choice for network printing.
Duty cycles–the percentage of time a printer is actively in use–are another issue. By choosing a printer that exceeds your current production needs, you can minimize maintenance requirements, an especially useful edge for small businesses that don’t have a dedicated IT staff.
Laser printers generally have more options for additional features, such as multiple high-volume paper trays, duplexing capabilities, and complex finishing features.
For a lot of businesses, even small ones, a mix of laser and ink printers makes the most sense. Some smaller businesses that don’t have huge printing loads do well with a couple of inkjets, but for businesses with heavier printing requirements such as long text documents, a few inkjets, if any, combined with a centralized laser for bigger jobs makes more sense and is more cost effective.

HP Quietly Suspends Web Jetadmin Plug-in Program
August 11, 2008 - With the release of Web Jetadmin 10 last year, HP quietly suspended the device plug-in development program that many third-party manufacturers (including Canon, Lexmark, Xerox and others) participated in to make their devices more fully compliant with HP’s popular network device management platform.
An HP spokesperson declined to elaborate on the fate of the plug-in program, other than to say that, “HP has discontinued the Competitor Plug-in program that provides new, non-HP printer and MFP device support for HP Web Jetadmin software. HP is in the process of defining a new program. At this time, there aren’t any additional details to share about the new program.” HP did note that multi-vendor device support remains important to some of its customers, and that HP Web Jetadmin continues to manage existing, supported non-HP devices.
But for new printers and MFPs, Web Jetadmin—like most other management utilities—will only allow administrators to monitor and manage settings available in the third-party devices’ public MIB (Management Information Base), not the more complete status information typically contained in the private MIB (for example, detailed meters), which was available with plug-ins.
Device makers BLI contacted were hesitant to speak on the record about the previous development program. BLI had heard unconfirmed rumblings that the price HP was charging for third-party device makers to participate in the program was “going up by a factor of 8x,” and that some device makers were rethinking their participation.

North America MPS Tracker ™ Study
The Managed Print Services market is changing dramatically
both in terms of how decisions are being made, and which
vendors are being selected for MPS agreements. Quarterly
results from Photizo Group’s North America MPS Tracker™
study (part of the MPS Advisory Service) indicate that the
MPS market is changing dramatically. For example, the study
shows that decision making for MPS agreements is driven
by the IT organization over 60% of the time. In many cases,
the traditional copier decision makers (purchasing, facilities
management, and operations) are ‘losing out’ in the internal
struggle to control the hard copy device fleet (the collective
group of copiers, printers, and MFP’s which reside in most
organizations).

If you’ve ever worked with tools you know the importance of having the correct tool to do the job that needs to be done. The right fit can make all the difference. When it comes to finding the right managed print solutions vendor, choosing the right IT fit is just as important. It can mean the difference between a smooth transition and implementation or costly missteps, both in terms of money and time. And, in a market that is moving swiftly toward managed print solutions, losing time means losing clients. Following are some tips from my experience having worked with IT teams across the country at dealerships large and small on how to find the right (f)IT for your organization.
Would you buy lumber from a software company?
Absolutely not! And, by the same token, not every print solutions vendor offers the right print management solution for you. They may have software that ranges from document management to print management, but buyer beware as this vendor may not be an expert in your specific print solutions needs. Just like the mega store promises to have something for everyone, many vendors also claim to “have it all.” The reality is, their broad research and development expertise simply may not support your very specific cost-reduction need. The bells and whistles from other software products do not make for a better print management solution. In fact, it might just overcomplicate what is essentially a simple problem/solution equation.
